How do I apply for Section 8 in San Diego or anywhere in California?

Families or individuals that want to apply for Section 8 online or otherwise, will be required to complete a Section 8 application for housing assistance. Individuals and or families may apply for Section 8 at the any housing authority in their area. Keep in mind that all housing authorities may have certain preferences as to who is eligible for their Section 8 waiting list and can fill out a Section 8 application through them. The application process is always free.
Do I qualify to apply for Section 8 in Los Angeles or San Diego California?
Typically, in order to qualify to receive a Section 8 Voucher, you must fall within the low income medial level mandated by HUD. A Section 8 application contains the information necessary for the Housing Authority to determine the person’s or family’s eligibility and documentation verifying income (earned and unearned) necessary to determine total and net family income. All verification essential to determine their total and net income and all other documentation relating to eligibility is made a part of the applicants record. The following information is usually needed to apply and eventually find listings for some housing and locate a Section 8 apartment or house.
How long is an open Section 8 waiting list in Los Angeles or San Diego, California?
The length of all Section 8 waiting lists varies for all housing authorities. One can expect to be on a waiting list for Section 8 for a few years. Public housing, however, usually has a much shorter waiting list.
Upon receipt of the family’s Section 8 application, after they apply for Section 8, the Housing Authority will make a determination of eligibility. The family will be notified of the approximate wait before housing may be offered. If the PHA determines the family is ineligible, the notice will state the reasons and will offer the family the opportunity for an Informal Review of the determination.
Housing choice vouchers are administered locally by public housing agencies (PHAs). The PHAs receive federal funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to administer the voucher program. A family that is issued a housing voucher is responsible for finding a suitable housing unit of the family’s choice where the owner agrees to rent under the program. This unit may include the family’s present residence. Rental units must meet minimum standards of health and safety, as determined by the PHA.
A housing subsidy is paid to the landlord directly by the PHA on behalf of the participating family. The family then pays the difference between the actual rent charged by the landlord and the amount subsidized by the program. Under certain circumstances, if authorized by the PHA, a family may use its voucher to purchase a modest home.
There are five eligibility requirements for admission to Section 8 or public housing: have an annual income at or below the income limits; meet one of PHA’s definitions of family; have at least one family member who is either a U.S. citizen or an eligible immigrant; provide Social Security numbers for every family member age 6 or older or certify that they do not have Social Security number; and sign consent authorization documents. In addition to the eligibility criteria, families must also meet KCDC screening criteria in order to be admitted and allowed to complete a ection 8 housing application.
